What to expect at your Intestinal Ultrasound appointment

Preparing for your appointment

Preparing for an IUS is easy. In most cases, no special preparation like fasting is needed, although some patients might be asked to arrive with a full bladder.

What happens during the procedure?

IUS takes 15-20 minutes and is done in a clinic setting.

Ultrasound gel is applied to the abdomen and a probe moved over the skin, which bounces soundwaves off the targeted organs to visualise the small and large bowel via images on a screen.

It is completely non-invasive, the procedure is not painful and there are no side effects. There is no radiation involved.

Results

Results are delivered in real-time. Following your procedure a report will be sent to your referring doctor.

Infection Prevention and Control

At Gastro Diagnostics, patient safety is our priority. We are committed to maintaining high standards of infection prevention and control during all intestinal ultrasound examinations.

Our infection prevention measures include:

  • Hand hygiene performed before and after every patient examination.

  • Cleaning and disinfection of ultrasound transducers between each patient using approved cleaning products in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

  • Cleaning of examination surfaces between patients.

  • Use of disposable examination paper that is changed after each patient.

  • Regular staff training in infection prevention and control practices.

  • Routine review of infection prevention procedures as part of our quality improvement program.

Intestinal ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure that does not involve ionising radiation, injections, sedation or surgical intervention. The risk of infection associated with the procedure is extremely low.

If you have any questions regarding infection prevention and control measures at our practice, please speak with a member of our team.
